Learning to sew again

I decided after searching for weeks for my ideal portfolio and case that I just needed to make my own. So I got some really nice card stock for the interior - Neenah Classic Crest in Epic Black. I cut black boards for the outside with hinges and decided to do post hole binding. I got all the following supplies at Dick Blick:

Heavy duty black board $6.00
Lineco spine repair tape $15.89
Pina Zangaro adhesive hinge strips (already 4 hole punched, really took the guess work out) 10 packs are $10.20ea
Pina Zangaro screwpost kit $4.68
Bookboard hold puncher$11.85

So I cut two boards down to be a bit larger than the 13x16 paper. Then I used the scraps to go inside for the posts, so they would be hidden. First I used the adhesive hinges (which I attached to the black card-stock I bought from Neenah) to measure where to punch the holes. I put the posts and the all the hinges, bookboard and adhesive ones together so I knew what the thickness would be before taping hinges down to the covers.

Then I bought super heavy weight canvas fabric, about $10. I spray mounted it to the covers and edged it on the inside of the covers with book repair tape.

Then i got a funky fabric for a case and used the heavy weight fabric as a liner. I sewed a pocket on it and attached a magnetic button closure.

I still have to make handles and a strap. I wanted the shoulder strap to be removable, so my friend saw some overall hooks and we decided that would be a really cool way to do it.

It was a lot of time and sewing, but now I have the exact portfolio that I want. Check it.

  1. Hey Annie, your portfolio case is rad! Good for you for taking matters into your own hands. I'm not sure if I understand why more people don't do this. Plus now your case is actually a portfolio piece. Rock on my dear.
